WORLD SCIENCE FORUM
Date of issue: 5 November 2009
The Hungarian capital, Budapest, is again hosting the World Science
Forum. For this occasion researchers of international renown, heads of
state, leaders of the world’s scientific organisations and bodies
funding research, as well as representatives of influential scientific
institutes will gather at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the
chamber of the upper house of parliament between 5 and 7 November 2009.
The meeting of scientists and politicians is jointly organised by the
HAS, UNESCO and the International Council for Science. The motto of WSF
2009 is “Knowledge and Future”.
The first, similar event held in
Budapest was the World Conference on Science in 1999. Since then, the
World Science Forum has been staged biennially on a date near the day
dedicated to science by UNESCO, World Science Day (10 November). In 2003
the WSF focused on "Knowledge and Society", in 2005 "Knowledge, Ethics
and Responsibility" and in 2007 "Investing in Knowledge: Investing in
the Future", with over 1,200 scientists, politicians and decision-makers
in attendance.
Under the auspices of the WSF, the organisers of the
world’s most significant international scientific forums will report on
the main achievements of and lessons to be learned from events
organised by them. Protecting the environment and climate change will be
dealt with by the panel of heads of state. The contribution by the
Chinese Academy of Sciences entitled “Science and technology foresight
and innovation policy for sustainability” will afford an opportunity to
promote Sino-Hungarian scientific relations. Subjects covered include
the funding of science, and separate sessions address science and
policy, and science and diplomacy. Contributors will discuss the
connections between science, ecosystems and sustainability, women in
science, and finding new young scientists. In addition, how the position
of science in society and the economy has changed over the last decade
will be reviewed, for which the 10th anniversary of the 1999 conference
will be the ideal occasion. However, foresight will be equally important
at the forum: the WSF intends to formulate a vision of the future of
science for the coming decades. Source:
