The Winter Olympics were last staged in Italy fifty years ago between 26 January and 5 February 1956 in Cortina d'Ampezzo, when 819 competitors from 32 countries took part. Then the Hungarian ice dance pair Mariann Nagy and László Nagy brought the silver medal home to Hungary. The individual idea for design, three silhouettes of the map of Italy in the Italian national colours as ski boots referring to the location of the XX Winter Olympics, imparts a cheerful mood to the stamp. The Olympic logo is in the top right corner. The first day cover shows stylised snowy mountains while the legends are repeated in the commemorative postmark, the stamp and the cover.
