On 12 April 1878 a decision was made to devise the organisational and operational principles for the Red Cross Societies working independently in Austria and Hungary. “…According to the adopted Constitution the Hungarian Women’s National Aid Society was founded at the general meeting held on 27 March 1879. The women’s society did laudable work in disseminating the ideas of the Red Cross and initiating the training of voluntary and vocational nurses. Its leaders were involved in the establishment of the Hungarian Red Cross. So they can be rightly regarded as the direct predecessors of the Hungarian Red Cross. Based on the commission received from the king, Gyula Károlyi began organising a voluntary aid association. The constituent assembly met on 16 May 1881 and declared the foundation of the Red Cross Society of the Lands of the Hungarian Holy Crown. On 17 May 1881 the two societies merged at a joint meeting held in the hall of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Its first president was Count Gyula Károlyi and the Vice-President Countess Nándor Zichy. … The functioning of the Hungarian Society was reported in a circular letter of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) of 20 January 1882. The Hungarian Red Cross became a member with equal rights of the international movement and has been an active member ever since. Over the last 125 years the Hungarian Red Cross has worked continuously in Hungary. Since 1919 it has been a member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and since 1992 the current president of the Republic of Hungary has been the patron of the Hungarian Red Cross. In 1993 the Hungarian Red Cross Act was adopted.”

On the stamp entitled the “Hungarian Red Cross is 125 years old” the Hungarian national colours feature alongside the familiar emblem of the organisation. On the first day cover for the stamp there is a montage that uses awards, medals, certificates, photos and other documents to recall the past of the Hungarian Red Cross. The graphics of the postmark shows the organisation’s official logo for its 125th anniversary.
