80th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF LÁSZLÓ PAPP

One of the most famous boxers in Hungary and around the world, boxing with the Budapest Bástya and Vasas Club, he won the national championship seven times between 1946-56, first as a middleweight, then as a heavyweight. He was twice amateur European champion. He triumphed as a middleweight at the 1948 Lon-don Olympics, and as a heavyweight at the Olympics in Helsinki in 1952 and Melbourne in 1956. He was the first to make the outstanding achievement of retaining his title for twelve years. As a professional, he had 29 bouts from 1957 onwards. Of these he won 27 and drew 2, retiring from the ring unbeaten. His mentor was the legendary trainer Zsigmond Adler, with whom he formed the perfect team. After his retirement he worked as a trainer and the coach of the national team along with Zsigmond Adler.

On the picture side of the postcard is a portrait of the boxer László Papp (1926-2003). In the top section a se-ries of images capture the dazzling movements of Hungary’s Olympic champion in a film-like manner. On the left is a list, far from complete, of his sporting achievements. The stylised graphics of the commemorative postmark show László Papp’s movement while boxing.
