ETHNIC MINORITIES IN HUNGARY II - GERMANS

Date of issue: 9 May 2008

The first denomination in the series presented the Roma minority in Hungary and the second features the German minority in Hungary through their traditions and art.
The Germans came to the Carpathian Basin at different times, from different areas and in larger and smaller numbers, settling here and there throughout Hungary. They made a significant contribution to development through their building work, culture and historic role as intermediaries. In Hungary the “parliament” of the Germans, the National Self-Government of Germans in Hungary, was elected on 11 March 1995. Among other endeavours, the Self-Government strives to preserve the German language and culture, to foster partner relations, and to support the economy, literature and the arts.
