Moldova, officially the Republic of Moldova, is an independent democratic state in eastern Europe lying on the East European plain. It is bordered by Ukraine to the north, east and south, and by Romania to the west. The eastern part of Moldova, the PridnestrovianMoldavianRepublic (also called Transnistria), is a breakaway de facto state. Two rivers, the Prut and the lower Danube, form the border with Romania, while the river Dniester separates it from Transnistria. Its capital and largest city is Chișinău. Other major cities in descending order of population are Tiraspol, Bălți, Bender, Rîbnița and Cahul. The country is a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States, La Francophonie, the Latin Union and the Organization of Black Sea Economic Cooperation. The commemorative cover also bears inscriptions in Hungarian and Moldovan and the flags of the two countries.
