PRESERVE THE POLAR REGIONS AND GLACIERS
Date of issue: 27 March 2009
The focal point of the subject is the preservation of the polar regions
and glaciers. The postal administrations of the countries participating
in the campaign can choose the motifs for the stamp design, the date of
issue and many other details as they think fit. Apart from the topic and
the name, a common feature is the official emblem symbolising an ice
crystal, the creation of the Finnish graphic designer Saku Heinänen.
Magyar
Posta is contributing to the realisation of the common design theme by
issuing a numbered block with two stamps, and is supplementing this by a
four denomination set of stamps presenting the fauna of the polar
regions. The stamp designs of the block shows a polar bear and an arctic
fox, while in the frame there are a whale, a seagull, a beluga whale, a
narval, a puffin and seals. On the stamps of the set a polar bear, a
musk ox, a snow leopard and king penguins are depicted in their natural
environment.
For the first time in stamp issuing traditional offset printing has been supplemented by iridescent spot-varnish screen printing, which is used in the manufacture of security products. Thanks to this, there are tiny silky, sparkling areas scattered on the stamp block, recalling the original, frosty atmosphere of the polar regions. The set of stamps is released in both offset and silk finish versions.
In the spirit of the stamps on the first day cover a seal cub resting on a block of ice is portrayed. The design of the special postmark is the logo for the block of stamps and a stylised drawing of penguins for the set of stamps.
