23 August 2007

The release of the stamp coincides with the centenary of the birth of János Selye (1907-1982), who became known throughout the world for his research on stress. Over a thousand experts from ninety countries discussed the latest developments in stress research in 200 speeches in 40 sections. This is thesecond conference of this nature, the first having been held to commemorate the 90th anniversary of János Selye’s birth. A commemorative stamp was also issued on that occasion. It is no coincidence that Selye’s name is associated with the conference as it was he who as a practising doctor recognised in the 1930s that numerous illnesses had something in common behind them. This led to the concept of stress being accepted in medical science. On the left of the stamp design there is a portrait of János Selye, who formulated the theory of stress. On the right there is a graphic composition symbolising the effect of stress on the individual. The emblem of the event is the main motif of the first day cover and the commemorative postmark is a stylised drawing of a stress molecule.
