CHRISTMAS 2006

Date of issue: 27 October 2006

From year to year a so-called tariff-correct stamp is issued for picture postcards and letters with a nominal value suiting the postal tariff with the not concealed purpose of the senders being able to dress up their letters and postcards in “holiday decoration”. With respect to its great success the HUF 30 stamp of the Christmas stamp series issued in 2002 will be issued again in 2006 being reprinting with a different nominal value.

The stamp was created on the basis of the painting by Erzsébet Udvardi, who lives and works in Badacsonytomaj. The excellent and recognised artist has received numerous prizes for her work, receiving the Kossuth prize in 1999. This is not the first time the artist’s work has been used for a stamp. The stamp design shows a reproduction of her work entitled Three Kings at Worship. The first day cover is decorated with the artist’s work entitled Madonna with Children, the graphic design of the special cancellation stamp shows a stylised drawing of a Christmas tree decoration, so referring to the festive atmosphere.

In accordance with the original works the stamp and envelope designs were created with special printing techniques, using a combination of gold and silver foil.Again there will be the Christmas Post Office in Nagykarácsony (A settlement, the name of which means “great Christmas”). Continuing the tradition, during the weeks of Advent between 3-26 December 2006 special stamp cancellation will be done in the Nagykarácsony post office using green ink. The designs for the cancellation stamps changing every week were created by graphic artist Orsolya Kármán.
