2006 FIFA WORLD CUP, GERMANY

Date of issue: 9 May 2006

32 teams in 8 groups will vie for the title of world champions in 12 locations (Berlin, Dortmund, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Hannover, Kaiserslautern, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich, Nur-emberg and Stuttgart). In the opening match the hosts Germany take on Costa Rica in Munich. The final will be in the Berlin Olympic stadium, renovated in 2004, where a crowd of 74,500 will follow the exciting events.
The main motif of the stamp is based on an individual idea – a goalkeeper diving across from one stamp to another, so the special graphic composition forming a whole figure can only be seen when stamps are placed side by side. Related motifs adorn the first day cover and postmark.
