SÜMEGCSEHI CHAPEL

SÜMEGCSEHI CHAPEL

On the picture side of the card the memorial chapel, Mary’s Fountain and the interior of the chapel are shown. In the interior space of the chapel the nave is divided from the chancel by double doors, which show the annunciation when shut. The Virgin Mary is on the right door while the Archangel Gabriel is on the left. When the doors are open, the biblical scene of Jacob’s dream can be seen with angles going up and down the ladder between heaven and earth. Above the chancel there is Christ’s cross which has rounded ends with depictions of the Holy Trinity vertically, and the mater dolorosa and St John horizontally. Beneath the cross to the right is St Francis and to the left the figure of John H. Newman, after whom the chapel is named, praying. The pictures were painted by Kossuth Prize winning artist Erzsébet Udvardi. The stamp design of the commemorative postcard shows John H. Newman (1801-90) with the memorial chapel in the background. The graphic design of the postmark is a stylized drawing of a decorative detail over the entrance of the chapel.
