10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE KÁJEL LACE HOUSE

Date of issue: 28 April 2006

In 1908 the Reformed minister Endre Kájel (1881-1955) organised the first lace-making course. After 1920 courses were organised for teachers arriving in Hungary from the areas ceded to neighbouring countries after WW1. These women later passed on the skills of making Endréd lace at organised lace colonies. At the start lace was made to order according to a pattern book. Later Endre Kájel’s wife Zsófia Koroknai not only designed lace patterns but also oversaw the standard of execution. The family collection of over 100 examples of lace is on display in the Kájel Lace House in Balatonendréd. Source: www.museum.hu
